The annual Forbes magazine valuation of NFL franchises was posted Wednesday morning, and the Cowboys topped the rankings for the eighth straight year - setting a new standard for American major-sports franchises by crossing the $3 billion mark for the first time.
Jerry Jones’ team outpaces the rest - including three teams that are worth more than $2 billion - even while it has gone 8-8 three straight seasons and hasn’t had a winning season or a playoff trip since 2009.
At $3.2 billion, the Cowboys are the world’s second-most valuable team, Forbes says, behind Spanish soccer power Real Madrid at $3.4 million.
The top 5:
Dallas, $3.2 billion
New England, $2.6 billion
Washington, $2.4 billion
New York Giants, $2.1 billion
Houston, $1.85 billion
The bottom 5 - relatively speaking, since 25 of the 32 teams are worth at least $1 billion:
St. Louis, $930 million
Buffalo, $935 million
Detroit, $960 million
Jacksonville, $965 million
Oakland, $970 million
The Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks - owned by Paul Allen, the NFL’s richest owner - are ranked 15th, worth $1.33 billion.
