Notably, Ash and Wraith don’t really have kits that are too similar, yet whenever someone mentions portal, it’s hard not to compare the two. Game Rant recently took place during an Apex Legends preview event, in which it became immediately clear that the two are not just more of the same.

Apex Legends Ash Abilities vs. Wraith

Before discussing their portals/ults, it’s worth highlighting how different their kit before that is. Wraith’s passive letting her know when she’s being aimed at and her Into the Avoid tactical ability letting her slip past damage is far more about survival than anything else. True, Wraith is a popular and good assault character in Apex Legends, but she’s more about moving, flanking, and being where she needs to be when she needs to be there.

In contrast, Ash is much more competitive and her kit is about dominating the competition, trapping and tracking them while proving she is the Apex Predator. Her kit reflects this and is nothing about flanking or survival, but she’s about proving she’s the best in combat. Her passive allows her to find death boxes as they pop (allowing her to find combat) and mark death boxes to find killers (to pursue combat). Her tactical ability traps the enemy and, while it has its counters, it’s more predatory in nature than Wraith’s tactical in Apex Legends. Of course, these similar concepts are also obvious in Wraith and Ash’s ultimate portals.

Apex Legends: Ash’s Ultimate Ability

Dubbed Phase Breach, Ash’s ultimate ability will take her and her allies into a singular direction within line of sight. Ash players have to dedicate themselves to the push when using her ability. With Wraith, her portal has a lot of benefits: trapping or kidnapping enemy Apex Legends players, getting an injured ally out of a fight, or repositioning for a strong advantage in a firefight. Wraith’s portal is flexible, but just like Ash herself, her portal isn’t.

Ash’s portal is good for getting her and her allies somewhere quick, getting closer to a fight that is far away, pursuing a new flank, or even dipping out of a fight. But, anytime he ability is used, players must dedicate themselves to the action. Indeed, it is perhaps more comparable to Loba’s teleport ability than Wraith’s portal, as once Loba teleports, the action is done. The same goes for Ash, who can put herself and her team into a strong tactical advantage with her portal, or into a disastrous one, and the action itself is done.

Apex Legends is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
